The Mercury understands there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man's death, which caused the shutdown of parts of the South Coast rail line for several hours.
The train was bound for Central station when the tragedy occurred, about 3.50pm on Tuesday, July 2.
Three fire crews, NSW Ambulance paramedics, rail staff and police converged around the stationary train about 150m south of North Wollongong station.
Stranded travellers at North Wollongong station were being told over the loudspeaker that there had been an incident.
"We are trying to organise buses but at this stage unfortunately there are none available," the announcer said, about 4.15pm.
The rail line remained closed between Wollongong and Thirroul until 5.20pm, with some replacement bus services operating in the interim.
Meantime, services remain down between Kiama and Bomaderry, where buses have been brought in to replace trains into the night.
NSW Train link South said some services between Kiama/Port Kembla and Waterfall/Central were delayed by up to 90 minutes.
The interruption to the Kiama-Bomaderra service, ongoing as at 7.40pm, is the result of a train from that service being used between Kiama and Wollongong, as part of the incident response.
