The Tulip Time Festival, Bradman Oval and the International Cricket Hall of Fame, and more recently Pie Time are among the attractions that have clearly put region on the map as a must-go-to destination.
And then there is the mystical appeal of a very special event with an international flavour, which has occurred on one day each year for more than 40 years.
That day is upon as once more with the 41st annual Brigadoon set to kick off in Bundanoon tomorrow (April 7).
The event is inspired by the 1954 MGM romantic musical starring Gene Kelly, Van Johnson, and Cyd Charisse.
If any villager ever leaves Brigadoon, the spell will be broken and the village will vanish forever.
Any outsider who wishes to stay must love someone in the village strongly enough to accept the loss of everything he or she knew in the outside world.
Brigadoon occurs far more frequently in Bundanoon, but perhaps it is the love of all things Scottish that keep this hugely popoular event from disappearing altogether.
The Southern Highlands celebration has survived for the past 41 years on the hard work of volunteers.
It’s potential to continue well into the future, entertaining upwards of 10,000 people annually also depends on volunteers.
And this year’s event is no exception.
In fact the number of people needed to ensure the success of Brigadoon is significant.
In addition to the many hours spent planning and preparing for the day that celebrates all things Scottish there are many additional people needed to ensure the smooth running of the day itself. Those who step up to assist will be a part of an event that has become a Highlands icon. Voluntary rolls include:
- Waste control - moving waste bins to and from the waste management vehicle
- Raffle ticket sellers – simple job sitting or standing
- Runners – doing errands around the oval
- Catering assistant – washing up, making fruit salad, preparing food
- Handy man – packing up mobile kitchen and loading a truck
