Blue Square exhibition raises more than $3000 to support cancer patients

The annual exhibition, which is in its seventh year, brings together artists of all ages in the Highlands.

As part of the showcase, they must embrace the colour blue in a square frame.

Held at the Bowral Art Gallery, there were more than 300 pieces on display from more than 200 artists.

The exhibition raises funds for Can Assist Southern Highlands, which supports cancer patients and their loved ones.

Entry fees contribute to the funds, with $10 from each entry being dedicated to the branch.

A $3320 cheque was handed to Can Assist President Jenny Harper.

"With over 400 patients now on our books and outgoings for support of cancer patients of over $10,000 a month, this donation helps our all-volunteer service support individuals and families in what is often their greatest time of need," she said.

Highlands resident Tim Olsen judged the artworks and the show was opened on April 19 by Sonja Millis.

"A core philosophy of Blue Square is one person can make a difference, but together we are greater than one person alone," she said.

"Here we are, 320 works from more than 200 people, who have made something real, working together in art, making a difference."

More than 150 people gathered at the opening to admire the artworks and see who won.

The $2000 first prize went to Alex McGowan for his picture Blue Moon, which is a ball pen drawing and collage relief work.

He was awarded the Bob Millis Prize in 2023, which honours the legacy of Bob Millis and his passion to teach art to children and adults.

This year, it went to Matthew Harvie, for Just Keep Swimming.

As part of the prize, he received a $500 voucher from Arthead, which can go towards art supplies and services.

Angela Spicer won the Hanger's Prize for Mind the Gap and received a $500 prize from Arthead for art services and supplies.

The exhibition will be on display until April 28 and the gallery is open daily from 10am to 4pm.
